“Freespace” is difficult to pin down, it is a management approach in the creative industries and also the theme of the Biennale Architettura 2018 in Venice. With Frank Alva Buecheler, lecturer and international arts manager, students of the “art market” module explored these topics between the areas of Giardini with the traditional pavilions and the impressive exhibition halls of the Arsenale in Venice: How do architects approach free space with regard to aesthetics and politics? What is the work of arts managers, curators and their teams behind the scenes of a biennale and mega exhibition?

Students’ favourites: The Australian pavilion bringing together work, architecture and nature under the theme of “repair”. The German contribution „Unbuilding Walls“ puts visitors in different aesthetic perspectives towards the wall when Germany was divided. Hot topic of discussion: The Swiss pavilion, winner of the Golden Lion, which presents an empty apartment with distorted proportions to those who enter - being reminiscent of one’s one childhood perspective. „A successful contribution to the topic and savvy curation“, says Buecheler. "Most Berlinale curators however seem - maybe in an egocentric way - to ignore the massive experience visitors are already exposed to and add too much of their own parts with information, text and abstract - instead of giving space to the aesthetic perception of the very FREESPACE itself“.
